Abstract

Stimulated by recent two-photon photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) studies by Petek and coworkers, a retrospective look at some fundamentals in the theory of ionic alkali adsorption on metal surfaces is presented that provides a simple correlation between free atom ionization potentials, ionic size, adsorption heights, and spectroscopically observed alkali valence-electron-binding energies.
