Abstract

The scientific information revolution comes from the conjunction of changes in science itself with the rapid increase of computer and telecommunications power. Enormous amounts of scientific data are being generated and new database techniques are being developed to manage and access these data, all in an environment shaped by the Internet. However, the full value of large-scale collections of scientific data will not be realized until important issues related to data quality, data usability and data expolitation are addressed. In this paper, we analyze today=s data, and the issues mentioned above. The need for data standards, data evaluation and new data mining are defined.
