Abstract
Starting from an analytic expression for the force on a spherical particle in vacuum from the Maxwell Stress Tensor, as well as the Mie solution for the response of dielectric particles to an electromagnetic plane wave, the scattering force is derived as a limit involving a tenth-order Taylor expansion. Starting from the a generalized Mie solution for a spherical particle in a standing wave, the gradient force is derived. In both cases, the Clausius- Mossotti factor arises naturally from the derivation. The limits agree with expressions from the literature with other derivations.
