Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is a simple but powerful declarative language, which extends the current multimedia technology on the Web with temporal synchronization capabilities. It uses the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to define a set of markup tags to associate the timing and positioning relationships between multimedia objects, such as audio, videos, images, and text. A Java applet-based SMIL prototype S2M2 is presented along with an overview of SMIL.
