This book chapter provides background on wheelchairs, patient lift devices and the combination of mobile patient lift and transfer devices and research. The NIST Home Lift, Position and Rehabilitation (HLPR) Chair is detailed explaining the system, its use for picking up and placing patients on chairs, beds, and toilets and for rehabilitation. Control research of the HLPR Chair for manual and autonomous modes are explained including leveraging the NIST Mobility Program research in this area. Improvements to the HLPR Chair design for better ergonomics and manufacturability are explained with guidance for future research.
