Abstract

A common issue when building distributed simulations is the issue of time management. Each discrete event simulation has its own notion of time, and a mechanism needs to be set up to allow each simulation to run at the same pace. Different architectures exist to perform time synchronization and are usually optimized for a certain scenario and certain types of simulations. The requirements for the type of data the simulations will be exchanging, the performance of the system used, the quality and latency of the network that will be used to run the distributed simulation, and the level of collaboration between the authors of the different individual simulations lead to different design decisions for the architecture of the distributed simulation. This paper describes a time management mechanism based on a Service Oriented Architecture that can be used in the construction of a virtual supply chain simulation.
