Wireless communications have evolved from the traditional radio and TV broadcasting to a broad spectrum of exciting applications in bi-directional and interactive wireless communications such as cellular system/phones, smart handheld devices, wireless local area networks (WLAN), Bluetooth, global position system (GPS), broadband satellite communication solutions, phased array RF systems, and other emerging wireless communication applications. Radio frequency (RF) and analog/mixed-signal (AMS) integrated circuits (IC) are the critical and enabling elements for the success of these wireless communications systems. The scope of this article involves the interplay among commercial wireless communication applications, available spectrum, and the kinds of elemental and compound semiconductors likely to be used. Developing RF and AMS technologies for such applications is not straightforward. Cost and performance are key considerations in selecting from among competing semiconductors for RF and AMS technologies, such as Si, SiGe, GaAs, InP, and others. This article is based on the RF and Analog-Mixed Signal for Wireless Communications Chapter in the 2003 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). This is the first time that an international technology roadmap for compound semiconductors has been presented in the context of the ITRS technology nodes. This paper also present highlights of this embeded compound semiconductor roadmap.
