Abstract

This paper describes how Product Data-Driven Engineering (PDDE) can be used to improve the competitiveness of U.S. industry. The various technologies and standards associated with PDDE are defined. The role of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in working with the standards community to facilitate the development of needed product- related standards is outlined. The activities at NIST that are being applied to a specific standards program, PDES, are described. Finally, the needed research to make PDES into the standard that will be most useful for implementing the information systems to support a sophisticated concurrent engineering environment that represents PDDE is discussed.
