The fourteenth Text REtrieval Conference, TREC 2005, was held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) November 15--18, 2005. The conference was co-sponsored by NIST and the US Department of Defense Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA). TREC 2005 had 117 participating groups from 23 different countries. This paper serves as an introduction to the research described in detail in the remainder of the proceedings.
