Micromagnetic Domain Structures of Nano-scale Nickel Dots

Abstract

The magnetic domain structure of cylindrical nickel dots is found to be a function of dot diameter and stripe period of unpatterned films of like thickness. This study was completed using magnetic force microscopy, and Landau-Lifshitz Gilbert micromagnetic simulations. The results in a series of 100 nm thick dots, between 60 nm and 1000 nm in diameter, fell into two categories: a series of stripe domains, and a set of ring domains. The domains, separated by magnetic vortices, increase in complexity as the dot diameter increases. The abundances of the imaged states is correlated with the calculated energy of the dots.
