Abstract

A NIST Reference Material, RM 8456,was characterized for 184 bars of Ultra High Molecular Mass Polyethelene (UHMW) , each unit was 7.62 mm (3 in) in diameter and 152.4 cm (5 ft) in length. Characterrizations were conducted for every 30.44 m of a 304.4 m continuous run of extruded UHMWPE. The properties measured were: Tensile Yield Strength, Ultimate Tensile Strength, Percent elongation at failure, and Tensile Elastic modulus. A report of investigation was prepared by the testing laboratory of the contractor, The American Dental Association Health Foundation Paffenbarger Research unit at NIST.
