Abstract
This paper discusses the creation and measurement of large amplitude, impulsively excited vibrational wave packets in small polyatomimolecules (CO2, SF6, CCI4,) and their photodissociation products. The wave packets are non-resonantly excited in the electronic ground stateusing, broad bandwidth infrared laser pulses. This makes the technique general and of direct relevance to reactions on the ground state potential energy surfaces, which have been largely inaccessible to wave packet studies. Multiple modes can be excited simultaneously, allowing for the measurement of coherences between modes as well as within a given mode. A simple theoretical model of the measurement allows for a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between the laser pulse and the molecular sample. We obtain information on vibrational dephasing and rephasing, intermode coherences, rotational dephasing, and dissociation. Wave packet excitation in Cl2 (resulting fromdissociation of CCI4,) is observed and discussed in detail.
