Influence of Shrinkage Stress Developed During Hardening of Photo-Cured Resin on Formation of Polymer Network Structure

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the influence of the shrinkage stress on the polymer network structure formed during the polymerization of a photo-cured resin. To vary the shrinkage stress developed in the photo-cured resin containing a fluorescent probe, the resin was polymerized, under two different conditions, in a mold that was made of a silicone gasket sandwiched between two glass slides. Under the first condition (high-stress resin), the resin was allowed to adhere to the slides, while under the second condition (low-stress resin), thin mold-release films placed between the resin and the slides prevented the adhesion. The specimens were prepared by irradiating, with visible light for 60 s, the resin in the mold, and then they were stored in the dark for 24 h. The fluorescence spectra of the specimens were measured at an excitation wavelength of 520 nm. The intensity ratio of the high-stress resin (1.63) was significantly higher than that of the low-stress resin (1.48). These results indicated that the higher shrinkage stress led to a more tightly packed network. It was concluded that the formation of the polymer network was affected by the shrinkage stress developed during the polymerization of a photo-cured resin.
