The NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) over time have received a number of inquiries regarding the suitability, use, and testing of hopper-type scales. The nature of those inquiries provides some indication that there is a lack of detailed information regarding the assessment of whether these devices are appropriate for the intended application. A number of inquiries concerned the use of hopper scales as reference scales used in testing automatic weighing systems such as belt-conveyor scales. These particular inquiries have raised questions related to the operation, design, and configuration of these types of scales
