Abstract

This article provides a short overview of past and present advancements in mobile communication systems, as well as identifying major challenges for the future generation of wireless technologies. Its main objective is to scan the special issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE, scheduled for publication in October 1999. It highlights the significance of each contribution with respect to the scope of the issue.
