A Fermi Gas of Atoms

Published

Author(s)

Abstract

Cooper pairing of atoms in a gas would provide a new and unique example of a fermionic condensate. However, recent theoretical treatments,by Murray Holland at JILA and by Eddy Timmermans at Los Alamos, have suggested that a superfluid phase transition in an atomic gas couldoccur at temperatures as high as half the Fermi temperature. Experimental work is proceeding to explore the possibility of accessing thisexciting new phase transition to superfluid state.
