Abstract
This publication will bring together remarks, papers, and photographs associated with various Hassler-related events held in Philadelphia and the Washington Metropolitan Area over the past twenty years. Starting with the 180th anniversary in 1987 of the establishment of the Survey of the Coast by Act of Congress in 1807, and continuing with the renovation the Hassler memorial monument on the outskirts of Philadelphia, a series of related events are being documented. Out of that renovation effort, completed in 1993, came two additional memorials, one at NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, in 1995, and another at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, in 2004. The publication will also present materials previously unknown to earlier Hassler historians such as the recently uncovered Hassler/Krusenstern correspondence obtained from the Russian Naval Archives at St. Petersburg. A comprehensive Hassler bibliography will also be included.
