Abstract

The Measurement and Computation of Fire Phenomena (MaCFP) radiation working group previously provided benchmark radiation data for two fire configurations using the Photon Monte Carlo Line-by-Line (PMC-LBL) radiation model. This study evaluates the performance of approximate radiation models, specifically lower-order spherical harmonics method (P1) and Finite Angle Method (FAM) radiation transfer equation (RTE) solvers combined with Gray, Step-Wise Gray (SWG), and Full Spectral k-Distribution (FSK) spectral models, against the PMC-LBL benchmark. Among these, in terms of accuracy and computational cost, the SWG with ten bands and FSK with 16 quadrature points coupled with FAM RTE solver emerge as good candidates for approximate radiation models in engineering applications.
