Abstract
The National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) is currently under development by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and ATF are currently working on a new project to provide virtual/physical bullet signature standards for the coming NIBIN. The virtual bullet signature standard will be a set of digitized profile signatures obtained from six master bullets shot at ATF and FBI central laboratories. The virtual standard is stored in a computer to produce the physical standard bullets on a numerically controlled diamond turning machine at NIST. In this paper, technical requirements, design, manufacture and test of the virtual/physical bullet standards are discussed.
