Degradation and Nanoparticle Release of Nanocomposite Coatings Exposed to UV Radiation

Abstract

The release of nanoparticles from nanocomposite coatings during their life cycle potentially has negative effects to the environments and presents a roadblock to their uses. The degradation and nanoparticle release of amine-cured epoxy coatings containing multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) and silica nanoparticles (nanoSiO2) exposed to UV radiation have been investigated. Amine-cured epoxy underwent rapid photodegradation, resulting in a substantial mass loss and marked concentration increase of MWCNTs and nanoSiO2 on the coating surfaces. The rates of mass loss and chemical degradation were lower for the MWCNT-filled epoxy than those of the unfilled or nanoSiO2-filled coatings, suggesting that MWCNTs have enhanced the photo-stability of amine-cured epoxy. Further, while SiO2 nanoparticles uniformly covered the coating surface after UV exposure, MWCNTs formed an aggregated network at the degraded surface. Direct evidence of nanoSiO2 release to the environment during UV exposure has been confirmed.
