Cybersecurity Definitions for Non-Experts

Abstract

Despite the importance of cybersecurity, there is no standard definition nor common terminology for explaining cybersecurity. Existing definitions largely target academics or technical experts but not non-experts (those without cybersecurity proficiency). To gain a better understanding of which definitions and terms within definitions are most appropriate to non-experts, we conducted a systematic search and analysis of existing definitions that are likely to be accessed by non-experts. This analysis is informing a future interview study to directly discuss definitions with non-experts.
