The Cooper pair transistor (CPT) is a superconducting electrometer that has applications in quantum information as well as fundamental superconductivity studies. Since it operates in a near-dissipationless mode, it has potential as a minimally invasive electrometer for other mesoscopic electronic applications. In this chapter, we discuss the theory of operation of the CPT and review microwave readout techniques. As an example, we examine its application in the study of nonequilibrium quasiparticle tunneling.
