Surface coatings represent an important class of fire protective treatments. When deposited conformally, these treatments offer extremely effective fire protection, especially to high surface area substrates (e.g., textiles and foams). Additionally, use of surface treatments preserves bulk mechanical properties and avoids issues of property deterioration and recyclability problems inherent to bulk flame retardant additives. The majority of the research in this field now consists of layer-by-layer coatings, polyelectrolyte complex treatments, and sol-gel coatings. The deposition of these fire protection modalities are detailed, with exemplary demonstrations highlighted. Barriers to widespread adoption and commercialization of these technologies are discussed, such as wash durability, scalability, processing time, and resource utilization. The latest work addressing these issues are presented throughout the chapter. Continued investment into these technologies promises to yield safer and more effective flame retardant treatments at a competitive price to existing technology.
