Computer-Aided Molecular Design of Fire Resistant Aircraft Materials

Molecular dynamic simulations and Cone Calorimeter measurements were used to assess the effects of electron beam irradiation and heat treatments on the flammability of the honeycomb composites used in the sidewalls, ceilings and stowage bins of commercial aircraft. The irradiaiton of this material did not result in any measureable changes. A dramatic reduction in the peak rate of heat release, however, was observed in samples that had been heated overnight at 250 deg C.
