Abstract
Applications for using metal-oxide nanoparticles to optimize UV absorption and to enhance the stiffness, toughness, and service life of polymeric materials become advantageous. To achieve the optimal material properties of those metal-oxide nanoparticle/polymeric composites, characterization of the nano/microstructure and dispersion of nanoscale particles from different process conditions is necessary to relate the key parameters, which affect the physical and mechanical properties. In this presentation, characterization of both TiO2 particles in an acrylic-urethane matrix and TiO2 nanostructure obtained through sol-gel synthesis were carried out using microscopy (confocal, AFM) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Results from SANS experiments measuring the size of the nano-TiO2 particle/cluster and the spatial dispersion in various nanoparticle/polymer samples under different preparation conditions will be presented and compared to the results of microscopy studies.
