Building a global thermophysical network: TRC (NIST) services for the community

Abstract

Thermophysical and thermochemical property data are needed for process design, assuring industrial safety, and many other applications. However, finding and accessing them may be challenging and dependent on the object type: commodity and specialty chemicals, dissolved and molten electrolytes, liquid crystals, polymers, etc. The Thermodynamics Research Center (TRC) created in 1942 at the U. S. National Bureau of Standards (now National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST) has served these needs mostly for organic compounds and their mixtures. An increasing amount and variety of information, as well as other challenges appearing with time, have required finding non-traditional solutions in response to those challenges, such as electronic databases, Web-based services, and interactions with publishers and researchers' communities. Building publicly available resources in collaboration with motivated researchers seems to be the most efficient way of further development.
