Through the application of modern physics concepts, advanced hydrogen sensors are being developed for rapid determination of weld hydrogen content and distribution. Electronic, optical, and magnetic property measurements have demonstrated the ability to measure and monitor the hydrogen content in alloys. These advanced electronic-based techniques offer significant changes in our approach to assessing hydrogen for welding issues. Two resulting significant advancements are the rapid determination of the content of diffusible hydrogen and the ability to measure the welded structure rather than just qualifying practice with test coupons. With the introduction of these advances, the welding industry will be using analytical tools similar to those applied in the semiconductor industry.
