Abstract

Pervious concrete is receiving renewed interest as a sustainable construction material for parking lots, sidewalks, and low-traffic-volume roads. A key characteristic of this material is its coarse porosity, achieved by omitting the fine aggregates from a standard concrete formulation. The volume fraction of this porosity, pore sizes, and their connectivity all influence performance properties such as permeability and acoustic absorption. This paper reviews recent efforts to quantitatively characterize the pore structure of pervious concrete and relate various characteristic pore size measures to permeability. The application of X-ray microtomography to obtain three-dimensional data sets of real pervious concrete microstructures is also presented.
