Adhesive bonding to dentin improved by polymerizable cyclodextrin derivatives

Abstract

Objectives. Determine bonding characteristics of a hydrophilic monomer formulation containing PCDs (Polymerizable Cyclodextrin Derivatives). The hypothesis was that a formulation containing hydrophilic cross-linking diluent comonomers and PCD molecules could form strong adhesive bonds to dentin. Methods. PCDs were formulated with sorbitol dimethacrylate, methacrylic acid and phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide photoinitiator (Formulation 1). The same formulation without PCDs isolated the effects of the PCDs (Formulation 2). A commercial self-etching bonding system was a comparative control (Formulation 3). Ground mid-coronal dentin was etched with 37 % H3PO4 for 15 s and rinsed with distilled H2O for 10 s. Formulations were applied to the moist dentin and light-cured 10 s. A packable composite was then applied through irises and light-cured 60 s. Teeth were stored in water for 24 h before bonds were tested in a shearing orientation. One-way ANOVA was performed on the data. Results. The average (n = 6) values of Shear Bond Strength (SBS), defined as loads at fracture divided by the 4 mm diameter iris areas, were: Formulation: 1 2 3 SBS in MPa (SD): 24.6 (5.4) 13.2 (3.7) 17.4 (4.0) SBS of Formulation 1 was higher (p<0.05) than that of Formulation 2, evincing that the PCDs led to improved bonding, and was also higher than that of Formulation 3 (p<0.05). Significance. These preliminary results are in accordance with the hypothesis that formulations containing PCDs can form strong adhesive bonds to hydrated dentin surfaces. Further improvements in bonding of resins and composites to hydrated biological tissues such as dentin by means of optimized PCD formulations are anticipated.
