Marvin Hamstad

Dr. Hamstad completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering/Solid Mechanics at the University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA in 1971. From 1971 to 1984 his AE research and development efforts were carried out at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL; Livermore, CA, USA). Lawrence Livermore was one of the "birthplaces" of acoustic emission technology in the United States. From 1984 to the present, Dr. Hamstad has continued his acoustic emission work at the University of Denver (Denver, CO, USA). The University of Denver also has a long history in acoustic emission, starting in the late 1960s under the leadership of Dr. Steve Carpenter. Since 1992, Dr. Hamstad has also had various associations with the Materials Reliability Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; Boulder, CO, USA). Dr. Hamstad initiated and developed an acoustic emission research program at NIST which emphasizes wideband waveform-based acoustic emission. Dr. Hamstad has also provided key leadership as chairman of the CARP (Committee on Acoustic Emission from Reinforced Plastics) Division of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. He completed sixteen years as CARP chairman in 1999. During his tenure as CARP chairman, he initiated the Acoustic Emission from Composite Materials (AECM) international symposium series which started in 1983 and continued at four additional sites in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1995 and 1998. Dr. Hamstad's research has covered many areas of acoustic emission technology ranging from nondestructive testing (NDT) applications to materials characterization. He also developed production NDT applications for acoustic emission while at LLNL.
