Abstract
Despite the existence and interest in additive manufacturing (AM) for many decades, industry adoption of AM technologies has been relatively slow. Recent advances in modeling and simulation of AM processes and materials are providing new insights to help overcome some of the barriers that have hindered adoption. Unfortunately, few models are developed in an easily composable manner as input and output definitions have not been standardized, and many of these models are developed independently and considered proprietary. In this paper we review several types of AM models and propose a classification scheme for a model integration framework. Several powder bed fusion models are discussed to provide illustrative examples of the proposed classification scheme. Requirements for the model integration framework are also proposed along with future work to realize a more coherent strategy for development and integration of AM models that will advance the field in a more collaborative manner.
