Biotechnology at NIST: Critical Measurements, Data and Standards for an Emerging Industry

Abstract

The Biotechnology Division is the focus of the NIST effort addressing measurement science and data needs for the emerging biotechnology industry. The Division has established a variety of long-range research programs essential for developing advanced measurement methods, Standard Reference Materials and databases for use by industry and other research enterprises. The current focus, highlights, and new directions of the major programs that include DNA technologies, Bioprocess Engineering, Structural Biology, Bimolecular Materials, and Bioinformatics will be presented. NIST is positioning itself to assist industry in the development of new products and processes in the next phase of the biotechnology revolution.
