Abstract
Advances in the structure determination of proteins involved in vertebrate phototransduction suggest that this will be the first G protein-coupled receptor-mediated signaling pathway for which a complete molecular description is available. This review highlights recent progress in the structural analyses of proteins of the visual system and the need for further structural work on individual components and their relevant complexes in solution and in the disk membrane. A comprehensive molecular understanding of the biochemical steps underlying phototransduction requires the use of experimental approaches that yield both static and dynamic information. Beyond the obvious aesthetic value, structural studies provide an exquisite and accurate understanding of the phototransduction machinery and how G protein-coupled signaling pathways work.Citation
