Abstract

Recently, we described a 3.4kb mitochondrial genome deletion having significance for identifying both malignant and benign prostate tissues (p<0.0001). Moreover, this biomarker was present in normal appearing tissue in close proximity to tumor, indicating a field cancerization effect. Here we report 4 case studies (3 malignant, 1 benign) suggesting that this field effect may occur in advance of tumorigenesis, or alternatively, identify the presence of a small tumor focus/foci which are difficult to detect with single, or even multiple sextant biopsy procedures.
