Abstract

This report describes a novel method for the concentration and separation of neutral and/or hydrophobic analytes based on a combination of the analytes partitioning into a micellar phase and their electrophoretic mobility. This method of simultaneous separation and concentration of species, which we call micellar affinity gradient focusing (MAGF) is effectively a combination of micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) and temperature gradient focusing (TGF). MEKC separates neutral species based on their partitioning into an ionic micelle whereas TGF separates analytes based on differences in electrophoretic velocity; in MAGF these two characteristics together determine the point at which an analyte focuses in the separation channel.
