Abstract
The modified Deutsch-Jozsa quantum algorithm, which is used for identifying whether a given binary function is constant or balanced, is demonstrated experimentally using pure coherent superpositions of molecular rovibrational eigenstates (wave packets). The function to be evaluated is stored in an oracle whose output is encoded into a phase-modulate broadband femtosecond laser pulse. The interaction of this shaped pulse with the molecule, which is initially prepared in a single pure robibrational state of a lower lying electronic state, transforms the molecular system into a rovibrational wave packet on an excited electronic state. The function's character (constant or balanced) is evaluated by measuring the signal resulting from probing the wave packet at a given single time after excitation using a second (unshaped) femtosecond pulse. The model system in the present experiment includes wave packets in the Li2 molecule, and the evaluation of the character of the two-qubit function is done through the ionization of the molecule.Citation
