Abstract

We investigated the competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic interactions in layered manganites by magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. The charge-order insulator LaSr2Mn207 reveals the phononic signatures of charge and orbital ordering which co-exist with double-exchange in the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR)compound La1.2Sr1.8Mn207. The CMR effect is a balance between the orbital and ferromagnetic correlations. A strong incoherent scattering by charge-order fluctuations dominates the quasiparticle dynamics in the ferromagnetic-metal state. The scattering is suppressed at low frequencies, consistent with the opening of a charge-density wave pseudogap and suggestive of non-Fermi liquid behavior.
