Abstract

By solving the hydrodynamic equations of irrotational superfluids we investigate the time evolution of a rotating condensate expanding after the sudden release of the confining trap. If the condensate is initially rotating slowly its angular velocity is predicted to exhibit a fast increase during the first stage of the expansion. The maximum value acquired by the angular velocity is accompanied by a minimum in the deformation of the condensate in the rotating plane. During the expansion the sample makes a global rotation of about p/2, the exact value depending on the initial value of the angular velocity.
