Second Intercomparision of Radiation Temperature Scales Among Four National Metrological Laboratories Using a Transfer Standard Radiation Thermometer

Abstract
Round-robin measurements with a transfer-standard radiation thermometer were organized by the National Research Laboratory of Metrology NRLM with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Physical Laboratory (NPL), IMGC (Institute di Metrologia, Italy) and (Physikalisch- Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in 1993. The purpose was to assess the mutual equivalence of the ITS-90 temperature scales established by the various national standards laboratories in the high-temperature range above 1000 C. The peak-to-peak difference was less than 0.5 C at 1000 C and 2 C at 2000 C. The thermometer was a monochromatic (0.65 m) silicon-detector thermometer from NRLM. A second series of round-robin measurements were undertaken to improve the scale agreement. The NRLM, NPL, PTB and NIST participated. The thermometer and a copper-point blackbody were circulated in the interval from August 1995 to December 1996. The stability of the thermometer was checked using the transportable copper- point blackbody source. The thermometer was then used to intercompare the radiance temperature scales of the host institute with that of NRLM. The temperature ranges compared were from 900 C to 2800 C at NPL, from 900 C to 2300 C at PTB and from 1000 C to 2700 C at NIST. All the calibrations agreed to within 0.2 C at 1000 C in 1 C over the entire temperature range.
