Abstract
With three complimentary diagnostic methods, we examined a series of 150 W metal-halide arc lamps containing a progression of additive chemistries: 1) pure Hg, 2) Hg + HgI2, 3) Hg + NaI, and 4) Hg + NaI + DyI3. We obtained spatial distributions of Hg using x-ray absorption imaging, spatial distributions of Dy and I using x-ray induced fluorescence, and core temperatures using optical emission spectroscopy. An identical series of lamps was examined by researchers at the University of Wisconsin using optical absorption and infrared emission spectroscopy. This work is part of the ALITE-II project, sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute, whose goal is to identify and reduce infrared losses in metal-halide arc lamps.
