Do Nonequilibrium Effects Control Strong Surface Segregation From Polymer Blends?

Abstract

Prior experiments on miscible polymer blend films, where one component segregates to both surfaces, show that the surface segregation profile flattens as film thickness decreases. Recent Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) experiments suggest a qualitatively different behavior. To understand the origin of these results, a Landau-Ginzburg formalism is used to demonstrate a complete departure of the experimental observations from established mean field theories of surface segregation. From these results, two means of rationalizing the experimental data are provided. We then propose the most likely solution results from a layer of low mobility chains near the surface that tend to create a non-equilibrium profile.
