Abstract
The Quality of the fiber/resin interphase region is critical to the final mechanical properties of a composite. By grafting a fluorescent dye to a glass microscope cover slip, a model interphase region can be directly studied. A blue shift and increase in fluorescence intensity is observed from the dye when immersed in curing epoxy. When the dye is free in the bulk resin, the fluorescence blue shift is 64nm during the epoxy cure. When the dye is grafted to the glass surface and immersed in the resin, the fluorescence blue shift is 42 nm. The difference in blue shift is attributed to a difference in properties between the bulk resin and the interphase region.
