Abstract
The addition of nitrogen to stainless steels can dramatically improve properties. Using rapid solidification processing with its increased chemical homogeneity makes further improvements possible. To enable optimization of properties, predictive modelss were developed from the results of previous work and used to guide the selection of compositions and processing conditions for a new series of alloys. These alloys were then fabricated and tested to determine the machanical properties and the resistance of these alloys to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This approach also resulted in alloys with a reduced quench rate sensitivity which will enable production of thicker cross sections or as thermal spray coatings.
