Abstract

Recently, we and other research laboratories have developed methods whereby an organic species is covalently attached to the polymer forming an organic salt to analyze by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Here, we discuss the use of the covalent cationization method to characterize polyethylene standards. Furthermore, the covalent cationization method will be compared to traditional metal cationization of narrow polystyrene samples to gain understanding of the mechanisms that govern the desorption and ionization processes.programmed
