Elastic Neutron Scattering and the Glass Transition in Thin Polycarbonate Films

Abstract

Incoherent elastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on hydrogenous polycarbonate films spun coat onto Si wafer. The drop of the elastic scattering intensity as a function of temperature is analyzed within the framework of theDebye-Waller factor to extract a mean-square-displacement of the supported films. The contributions from the polymer, in comparison to the Si, appear to dominate the mean-square displacement for films as thin as 75 . We demonstrate that the mean-square displacement is diminished as the thickness of the film is reduced. There is also a significant increase in the apparent glass transition temperature of the confined polymer film as the degree of confinement increases.
