Abstract
A series of smooth Fe-Pt thin film alloys have been grown by electrodeposition at potentials positive to that required to deposit elemental Fe. XRD of 100 nm thick FePt films indicate the formation of fine grained face centered cubic alloys, and the observed shifts of the (111) peak position with potential are consistent with changes in alloy composition determined by RBS and EDS. The codeposition process is driven by the negative enthalpy associated with alloy formation. Teh experimentally determined relationship between alloy composition and the iron group underpotential was found to be in good agreement with free energy calculations based on thermochemical data. The generality of predictions of codeposition based on thermodynamic calculations is briefly discussed.Citation
