Abstract
Prealloyed powders are very attractive in the development of high performance alloys for automotive applications. Al-Fe prealloyed powders were consolidated with pure Al powder to enhance compressibility. Different combinations of coarse and fine powders of each component were processed, and the green and sintering behavior evaluated. The highest strengths were obtained with a combination of coarse prealloyed powder mixed with finer soft powders. The effect of powder size ratio on powder packing, green and sintered density, and strength was evaluated. A model was developed to predict the green density of each of the composite powder mixtures. Relatively accurate predictions were obtained, particularly for powder mixtures with narrow powder size distributions.
