Abstract

Wear studies under lubricated conditions can be classified into two nominally distinct categories: investigations of thewear mechanisms active within the material, and studies of the degradation mechanisms active within the lubricant. Thetwo categories, however, are linked by the chemical interactions active between the material and the applied lubricaHistorically, much confusion has existed in the literature because the two communities investigating the two extreaspects of lubricated wear often have not interacted sufficiently to understand each other's requirements and objectivWear study began in earnest in the 1970s with a primary aim to evaluate new materials for various technologies. Manyof the methodologies were established using dry conditions. We will use this perspective as a baseline to compavarious wear phenomena under lubricated conditions.
