Abstract
A model of the impingement during solidification of many particles with differing orientations is discussed. The subsequent evolution of the grain boundaries created by this impingement is also calculated. Based on earlier phase field models, a new order parameter is introduced, and thus orientation of crystal/disordered interfaces can be determined relative to a crystalline frame. This model requires far fewer equations of motion than previous models of grain boundary dynamics, and obeys physicaol symmetry requirements upon the free energy.Citation
