Abstract
It is proposed that a deforming solid is composed of two types of deforming regions: regions of percolating slip (slip bands) and regions of non percolating slip (matrix). The slip bands are identified with channels between GNB's (Geometrically Necessary Boundaries), which are stabilized at the primary slip plane orientation by interactions between conjugate and primary slip dislocations absorbed by the boundaries. The relaxation between bursts of percolating events is determined by the kinetics of GNB recovery after shut down of an open channel by back stresses generated during the strain percolation. The nucleation of new channels is a stochastic search for open channels among the fluctations continuously generated in the matrix, mediated by the value of the local Schmid factor for an incipient channel. The mechanical constitutive law is dominated by the strain contributed in a percolation burst, the relaxation time between bursts, and the nucleation of new channels.Citation
